CHAPTER NINETEEN: SHIELD

“What happened?” I ask Axel as I head out the door to my car. He tells me about taking Lenora and Lana to visit the architect that worked on Dante and Chaos’s homes.

“When she came out, I could tell he said something to upset her. I asked Lenora to tell me what happened, but she claims he only bad-mouthed the club. But I don’t think that’s all. I pushed a little to get more information. She said he made her uncomfortable, but that’s all I could get. However, I think he tried following us.”

“What do you mean?”

“Before I left the neighborhood, we had a tail. The truck was like the one he pulled up in. A 2021 Chevy Silverado in dark blue. However, I didn’t see him backing out of the garage when I checked my rearview as we drove away. Whoever it was, he stayed back far enough and kept a car between us so I couldn’t get the license plate. I pulled a few maneuvers to lose him, then parked to see if I could get a look at him when he drove past, but he must have turned around.”

“Where are Lenora and Lana now?”

“In their apartment. I made sure no one followed us there. However, I’m staying here until you arrive. I didn’t tell Lenora about the tail. Although she’s smart, so it’s likely she figured it out. I saw her checking the side mirror.”

“Ok, I’m on my way home now. Thanks for taking care of them.” I end the call and stand up. Harding glances at me when he sees me putting my jacket on.

“Are we going somewhere?”

“Just me and I’m headed home,” I tell him.

“Are Lenora and the baby okay?” He asks.

I glance at him to get a feeling for whether his concern is genuine or just curiosity. “They’re fine. She’s had a busy day and needs my help.”

“Okay, I’m going to put in a few more hours. I have a search going for like crimes. I can’t shake the feeling that Lindsey was not our killer’s first victim. The attack seems professional to me. He not only took her electronics, but all traces of the baby’s DNA.”

I nod in agreement and leave him to it. My brothers are also conducting a search, but it doesn’t hurt to have multiple eyes looking through the data. I can’t shake the feeling that we’ll have another victim before we identify the killer.

I didn’t like learning Lenora moved out of my home, but now I’m glad she’s living at Crossroads. My place has solid security, but Crossroads has more. Byte, Smoke, and Maestro ensured Crossroads had the same security as our clubhouse.

I send Axel off with a fist bump. “Thanks for taking care of them.”

“My pleasure. Have her call me if she needs to go anywhere.”

I stomp up the stairs to Lenora’s apartment and give the door a soft knock. Lenora answers with a brilliant smile on her pretty face.

“I almost didn’t hear your knock,” she says, opening the door wider so I can step inside.
